XLIF PROCEDURE: ACCESSING THE
SPINE FROM THE SIDE OF THE BODY

NuVasive is best known for its
development of the XLIF procedure
(eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion). By
accessing the spine from the side of
the body, XLIF eliminates the
debilitating effects of cutting back
muscles, removing bone, and retracting
the neural elements that are typically
experienced after a conventional
posterior surgical approach.  
Additionally, XLIF avoids retraction of
internal organs and major blood
vessels as is necessary in the
conventional anterior surgical approach
to reach the spine.
XLIF is a safe and reproducible
approach with minimal disruption,
making post-op recovery easier for the
patient.
With this procedure, the spine is
approached from the side of the body.
With the patient positioned on the
surgical table on the side, two small
incisions are made: one directly over
the side of the waist, and the other
slightly behind the first.



COFLEX IS MINIMALLY INVASIVE,
NON-FUSION IMPLANT IN SPINAL
SURGERY
The small titanium Coflex device is a
u-shaped piece of flexible metal which
is inserted between two vertebrae.
It is designed to act as a shock
absorber to replace the function of
discs which may deteriorate in this
function as we age and to stop discs
from collapsing;
The coflex technology is a minimally
invasive, non-fusion implant that allows
movement of the spine in both flexion
and extension, while providing
interlaminar stabilization, foraminal
distraction and facet distraction. The
coflex is a U-shaped titanium alloy
surgical device which is implanted in
the interlaminar space following a
surgical decompression. The coflex is
being evaluated in the United States for
use in patients with moderate to severe
spinal stenosis, isolated to 1 or 2
levels, in the region of the first to the
fifth lumbar vertebrae, specifically L1 to
L5.
